A Fire and Safety Audit and Inspection is a service that identifies and eliminates fire threats while also highlighting areas of concern about fire protection system upkeep. Fire and Safety Audit and Inspection- Building Criteria
The following are examples of structures that require fire and safety audit and inspection and thus the services of an FSM. All public or industrial buildings must employ a fire safety manager if they meet at least one of the following criteria:

- Public Structure (which includes commercial buildings)
- Having 9 floors or more in height (including any basement);
- Is used, built or modified to serve as a hospital;
- Having a floor space of at least 5000 square metres; or
- Having a capacity of at least 1000 people
- Industrial Buildings
- Public Structure (which includes commercial buildings)
Having a floor area or site area of 5000 square metres or more;
Having an occupant load of 1,000 people or more.
All public or industrial buildings must employ a Senior Fire Safety Manager if any of the following conditions are met:
- That has a capacity of at least 5,000 people and
- That is, a building with a height of 31 storeys or more (including any basement);
- A building with a gross floor space of at least 50,000 square metres; or
- That has a basement level with a floor area of 10,000 square metres or more; or
- In which fire safety work is carried out in accordance with a plan that uses an alternative solution that the Commissioner reasonably determines to be difficult.
What’s Covered in Fire and Safety Audit and Inspection
Fire and Safety Audit and Inspection conducted by FSMs and SFSMs are responsible for the following tasks:
- Inspections of fire safety should be done regularly.
- Conduct firefighting and awareness training.
- Prepare a Fire Emergency Plan (FEP) and keep it up to date.
- Prepare an annual report and submit it to the building owner.
- Make sure your fire building certification is up to date.
- Per year, conduct two fire drills and two tabletop exercises.
- The CERT team is being formed.
- New fire safety regulations and the Fire Safety Act are being advised and updated.
- Provide suggestions for improvement and make recommendations to management for consideration and implementation.
- For exercises and audits, coordination with SCDF is done by FSMs and SFSMs.

- Buildings’ fire safety procedures should be improved.
- In areas where flammable chemicals are kept, handled, or transferred, identify and control ignition sources.
- Review chemical compatibility in storage areas and make recommendations for fire loss prevention.
- Examine the electrical hazards that could result in a fire.
- Reviewing the fire detection measures in place and making recommendations for improvements.
- Review and suggest changes to the various active (fire hydrant, sprinkler, portable fire extinguishers) and passive fire safety standards for chemical storage and handling facilities.
- Review of the plant’s fire alarm and emergency fire systems.
- Review contractor safety awareness (chemical spills, firefighting, emergency communication, knowledge of plant dangers and safety rules) and make recommendations for appropriate improvements to increase contractor safety.
- Employees’ safety awareness and training requirements (training identification and efficacy) in relation to dangers present are reviewed.
